Holy basil, or Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), is a revered adaptogenic herb in Ayurvedic medicine. Known as the “Queen of Herbs,” it supports the body’s stress response, promotes longevity, and enhances mental clarity.
Growing Conditions:
Holy basil prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Plant after the last frost when the soil is warm. Tulsi thrives in heat and can be grown in containers or garden beds. Space plants 12-18 inches apart.
Caring for Holy Basil:
Water regularly but avoid waterlogging. Pinch off flowers to encourage bushier growth and prevent premature bolting. Fertilize monthly with compost tea or a balanced organic fertilizer.
Harvesting Tips:
Harvest leaves once the plant is about 8 inches tall. Pick in the morning for peak potency. Use fresh or dry the leaves for tea and medicinal preparations.
Medicinal Uses:
Holy basil is renowned for its adaptogenic properties—helping the body cope with physical and emotional stress. It also supports the immune system, respiratory health, and blood sugar balance.
Tulsi Stress-Relief Tea Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon fresh tulsi leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried rose petals (optional)
- 1 cup boiling water
- Honey to taste (optional)
Instructions:
- Steep tulsi and rose petals in hot water for 7-10 minutes.
- Strain and sweeten with honey if desired.
Drink this calming tea during times of stress or fatigue.
Culinary Uses:
Holy basil has a spicier, more clove-like flavor than sweet basil and is less common in Western cooking. It’s sometimes used in Thai dishes, teas, or infused honeys.
Safety Tips:
Holy basil is generally safe in moderate amounts. It may lower blood sugar or affect fertility, so consult a healthcare provider if pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
Quick Summary:
Holy basil (Tulsi) is a deeply healing, sacred herb that calms the mind, strengthens the body, and nourishes the spirit. Its easy cultivation and wellness benefits make it a valuable herb for everyday use.
