Cilantro: Bold Flavor with Detoxifying Power

Cilantro (Coriandrum sativum), also known as coriander, is a fast-growing annual herb with a bright, citrusy flavor and powerful health benefits. Both its leaves (cilantro) and seeds (coriander) are used in global cuisines and traditional medicine.

Growing Conditions:

Cilantro grows best in cool weather and prefers full sun to partial shade. Sow seeds directly into well-drained soil in early spring or fall. Thin seedlings to 6 inches apart. Cilantro bolts quickly in heat, so plant successively every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply.

Caring for Cilantro:

Keep soil evenly moist and mulch to retain cool temperatures. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can reduce leaf flavor. Once it bolts, allow the plant to flower and set seeds to harvest coriander. Aphids and mildew can be managed with neem spray or good airflow.

Harvesting Tips:

Harvest leaves when they are 4-6 inches tall, cutting outer stems first. For coriander seeds, let flower heads brown and dry before collecting and storing.

Cilantro is known for its detoxifying effects, particularly in helping the body eliminate heavy metals. It also aids digestion and has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.


Cilantro Detox Smoothie Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1/2 cup chopped cucumber
  • 1/2 green apple (cored)
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger (grated)

Instructions:

  1. Blend all ingredients until smooth.
  2. Pour into a glass and enjoy as a morning detox boost.
